I got a great e-mail this morning. It has several different ideas on how to deal with the mass of halloween candy our children receive. Good Luck! Let us know which is your favorite and if you have any ideas of your own! Here's the link: http://www.mamapedia.com/list/battle-dash-free-tips-for-handling-the-halloween-candy

I let my kids pick out about 10 pieces that they get to put in a baggie with their name on it.
When I lived in AZ, I would give the rest to my friend who took it down to Mexico and gave to kids for Christmas. Now I have convinced my Dad to take it to S. America to hand out to the kids when he goes on humanitarian trips.
If you try, you can always find someone who is going to a place where it would be a big deal for little kids.
Thanks, Anna! I love it!
I'm all for teaching your kids to be nutrionally sound, feeding them heathy and all that jazz... but, in the back of my mind keeps running the same thing.... sometimes, we need to just let kids be kids and relax a litte. I have fond memories of Halloween growing up. Those memories include the costumes, Halloween night chili dinner and running around the neighbor seeing how much candy haul we could pull in. Nothing beat going back home and enjoying that wonderful candy. One time during the entire year that I got to keep all that candy just for myself. And I loved it. So while I will feed my kids a healthy dinner tomorrow night and every night after that, I've made the decision to just relax and let my kids enjoy this fun holiday and make some memories of their own. Moderation in all things.
Anonymous- Thanks for your opinion. I think we all, as parents, have a responsibility to find a balance in our lives that works for us. If it works for you to let your kids have all the candy they want, great! I too have fond memories of Halloween, and plan to make Halloween just as fun for my kids. This post is to give ideas to those who want to let their kids enjoy Halloween, but not to let the candy stash hang around for a long period of time afterward.
P.S. Next time you should leave your name so we can address you properly. Thanks!
Just thought I'd report on how the big day turned out. It was AWESOME! My kids ran bat-crap-crazy all over the place chowing on candy. Which was fine with me. But then? I told them that I'd pay them $10.00 each for their bags of candy. They pushed back a little (which I totally expected), so we played the negotiation game. I told them they could keep 3 pieces and I'd still buy the rest from them. They said "8 pieces." I said, "5." Good news. Mission accomplished. All parties are happy and nobody feels deprived. Now I just have to figure out what to do with all this CRAP!
I got lucky this year- my kiddos had a blast trick or treating, but are young enough that they forgot about it by Sunday morning. out of sight, out of mind. Now I just have to get it out of the house so I won't eat it. :)
Annie, my lift teacher was saying today that she takes hers and donates it to the boys and girls club, good luck finding a place to dump it. I'm still trying to convince Bryan to let me buy it off the kids. He's more opposed to the idea than they are, go figrue. He wants them to enjoy the fruits of their labor...
A couple years ago I started the tradition of letting the kids pick out a small amount of candy, and then letting them leave out the rest for "The Great Pumpkin" who comes and exchanges it for a surprise. It's usually a toy they have been wanting. This year they got "Monsters vs. Aliens."
I got an idea this year (from another friend) who is shipping the excess to a soldier instead of dumping it in the trash (like I did the last 2 years.) www.anysoldier.com
Thanks Emily! Great ideas!
This year went well for our family - Talbot chose to eat suckers on Halloween, and since he doesn't know that you can bite them to eat them faster, it takes him forever to finish them! The whole night, he ate two suckers...He was working on his second one for like three hours, I think!
The next morning, he said he wanted candy for breakfast...so I told him he could have two pieces, and that we would give the rest away. I think he was so surprised I was actually giving him more candy, that he was really happy. He said, "okay, I'll take two pieces and then you throw the rest away." I happily let him have his two pieces, made him a green shake to balance out the sugar high, and we were all happy! No lingering candy to compromise his immune system for fall/winter, and happy memories!!
